Carol was born on Nov. 30, 1925, to Walter and Caroline Hanscom in San Francisco, Calif. She married Edmund G. Russell, a career USAF pilot/navigator in 1945. Her family saw many duty stations, eventually settling in Dover in 1958. Much of Carol's professional life was spent working in libraries including Wesley College library, Central Middle School library, and 20 years in the Law Library for the State of Delaware.
After retiring, she and Ed moved to Greensboro, Md. Retirement suited them well as they enjoyed their life fishing, traveling the U.S. and abroad, and donating time to literary programs and church. The Monastery of St. Gertrude in Ridgely, Md. became a large part of Carol's life. It is there that she became a Benedictine Oblate. At the time of her passing, she was a Benedictine Oblate and a member of St. Benedict's Church in Ridgely.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Edmund G. Russell in 2009; and by her son, Glenn Hanscom Russell in 1993.
Surviving members of the family are son, Scott (Patricia) Russell of Dover; granddaughter, Kealy (Jeff) Merritt; and great-grandchildren, Hunter and Olivia Merritt of Dover; and granddaughter, Ariane (Robert) Nichols; and great-grandchildren, Finn and Sadie Nichols of Magnolia.
A memorial service will be held at St. Benedict's Church in Ridgely, Md. at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018.
