DOVER - Charles L. Witt passed away from complications of COPD on Aug. 21, 2013 at Kent General Hospital. He was born in Dover, Del. on Dec. 9, 1938 to the late Charles A. Witt and Dorothy Sapp Witt. Mr. Witt was a 1956 graduate of Caesar Rodney High School. He also received Bachelors and Masters Degrees from the University of Delaware. He worked at McGinnis Markets and Marstellers Markets while attending college. After college he was an instructor in Business Administration at Delaware Technical College, Southern Campus. Mr. Witt later became Business Department Chairman. He was nominated by the college to the White House Fellows Program. During this time, he taught evening courses at Del Tech, Delaware State College and Wesley College. He worked for the Farmers Bank as Personnel Development and Training Officer and instituted many training programs. It was during this time he partnered with his brother Terry to open Witt Brothers Market. In 1977 he obtained his real estate sales license and started work for Auen Associates Realtors. In 1980, he and his wife Cynthia, opened Woodburn Realty Company in Dover. He later obtained his real estate broker's license and Certified Appraisal license. Mr. Witt served 13 years on Dover City Council, the last 3 as Vice Mayor. He served a term as Vice President of the Delaware League of Local Governments. Mr. Witt also served six years on the Delaware Council for Real Estate Appraisers, two as chairman. He was a founding member and President for two years of the Delaware Association of Appraisers. Mr. Witt was twice elected President of the Kent County Association of Realtors and received the Realtor of the Year Award for Kent County two times, and the G. Leslie Gooden Award for outstanding service to the real estate profession. He was a co-founder of the Center for Continuing Education which offered continuing education to Realtors for 18 years. He enjoyed watching the Phillies, woodworking and stamp collecting. Mr. Witt was an active member of the Dover Stamp Club. He loved vacationing in the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Skyline Drive and particularly at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria, Virginia. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Witt. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Cynthia; daughter, Cathleen Vandenbraak and her husband Gerald of Wilmington; son, Christopher Witt and his wife Brandi of Hillsborough, N.J.; sister, Barbara Keegan and her husband Gregory of Newark; brothers, Terry Witt and his wife Terrie of Wyoming, Gary Witt and his wife Cindy of Woodside and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held 8 p.m., Sun. August 25, 2013 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover.
