MILFORD - Charles W. Walls, Sr., known to many as 'Bill' or 'Charlie', passed away Sunday, July 1, 2012 in his home. Charles was born in Milford, son of the late Joseph G. Sr., and Anna Mae (Glanden) Walls. He was a Guard with Playtex in Dover for 37 years. He also owned and operated Bill's Lawn Mowing and Trim. Many years ago, he worked with Delaware State Archives. He was well known in the fire company family. He began his membership as a young man with South Bowers Volunteer Fire Company and later with Frederica Volunteer Fire Company. He was also very involved with the fire police. He had served as Chief, Vice President and Past President with South Bowers. He also served as president of Kent Co. Fire Chiefs, Kent Co. Fire Police Association and Delaware State Fire Chief's Association. He was named State Fire Policeman of the Year in 2010 and has been involved with fire service for 50 years. He was a member of Sardis U.M. Church. He enjoyed anything outdoors, especially gardening, grass cutting, fishing or hunting. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Janice (Horne) Walls; three sons, Charles W. Walls, Jr., Richard J. Walls and companion Kelly Wyre, all of Milford, and Steven Walls and wife Valarie, of Harrington; six siblings, Joyce Glenn (Charles) and Betty Lou Mintzer, all of Milford, Louise Betts (Bill), of Frederica, Bonnie Thompson (Gary), Buddy Walls (Barbara) and Louie Walls (Jean), all also of Milford; two grandchildren, Amanda and Jonathan Walls; Kelly's three children, who were also special to him, Shaun Kennard, Courtney and Holly Bruns; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. A funeral service with fireman's honors will be held at 11 a.m.. Friday, July 6, 2012, in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 NW Front Street, Milford, De with visitation Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to VITAS Hospice, 1016 N. Walnut Street, Milford, DE 19963 or Frederica Volunteer Fire Company, c/o Steve White, PO Box 283, Frederica, DE 19946.
