FELTON - David L. Whitt passed away at his home in Felton under the care of Delaware Hospice on Tues., Mar. 12, 2013. Dave was born in Pageton, W. Va. on Feb. 13, 1933, the son of the late Charles and Nannie Whitt. He was also preceeded in death by three brothers, Robert, Wayne and Bert; and one sister, Pauline Calhoun. He joined the U. S. Army in Jul. 1950 and retired in Feb. 1971 as Sgt. First Class from the Army War College, Carlisle, Pa. He then moved to Delaware where he went to work for the State of Delaware, Department of Agriculture as a meat inspector and later as a Compliance Officer until he retired in 1991. Dave was a a past commander of the Adams, Simpler & Ware VFW Post 6009 of Felton. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #30 of Felton, a member of the Grand Encampment #6, Patriarchs Militant Canton #4 and Sarah Rebekah Lodge #16. He was Grand Master for the State in 1982-1983 and also served on Harry Lohman's Sovereign Grand Lodge Staff in 2001-2002. Dave was a member of Manship Chapel and served on the Deacon Board. He loved to cook breakfast for the men and also helped with the dinners. Dave volunteered for approximately 15 years at the USO Delaware at Dover Air Force Base. He enjoyed serving coffee to the service members. Dave was a soft spoken, quiet, easy going soul who loved his family, God and his country. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Colleen Whitt; one son, Glenn and his wife Kim of Dover; one daughter, Rhonda Davis of Camden; and six grandchildren, David Alexander (Alex), Christopher, Bradley, Makayla, Natalie, and Michael. Funeral services will be held on Fri., Mar. 15, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Manship Chapel, Felton, where friends may call from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. before the service. Interment will be held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetary in Millsboro, DE. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to USO Delaware, 500 Purple Heart Way, Dover, DE 19901; Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901 or Manship Chapel 4912 Burnite Mill Road, Felton, DE 19943. Arrangements handled by Berry Short Funeral Home Felton, DE.
