DOVER - Elizabeth Baston Flanagan peacefully passed away on Thurs., Sept. 12, 2013 in Oxford, Pa. Elizabeth, known to her friends and family as Betty, was born Apr. 23, 1927 in Jersey City, N.J., the daughter of Thomas Jos. and Margaret (Doran) Baston who emigrated from Passage East, Ireland. Betty grew up in Jersey City and was employed with Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City. She married the love of her life, John (Jack) Flanagan of Jersey City, N.J. in 1956. She moved to Dover, Del. in 1964 when Jack relocated from Hoboken, N.J. with General Foods Corp. Betty lived in Dover for 48 years before moving to Oxford, Pa. to be closer to her children. She was a loving and devoted homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She knew in 2nd grade that her true calling was to be a mother. Her loving and nurturing spirit extended beyond her own children as she was filled with compassion and love for others. She carefully tended to and nurtured her relationships with God, family and dear Dover friends as she considered her friendships one of her greatest blessings in life along with family. Betty will be remembered for her sense of humor and fun spirit. She loved making memories and sharing fun and laughter with others. She maintained her great sense of humor even in the last months when her illness could have gotten her down. She was an inspiration to many as she lived life to the fullest. Gardening was one of her passions as she received great joy from puttering in her flower gardens. She loved reading several newspapers each day and enjoyed her large music collection. She cherished her Irish heritage and Irish music. She also enjoyed entertaining, taking day trips with her girlfriends and traveling abroad. Betty was a long time member of Holy Cross Church and the Dover Elks Club Ladies Auxiliary and had served as a volunteer at Kent General Hospital in Dover for many years in the Human Resource Department and was also a volunteer at Mom's House in Dover. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, John (Jack) Flanagan in 1984; her brothers, William and Thomas Baston; and her sister, Margaret Garvin. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her three children, Kerry Flanagan, Ellen Flanagan Rollins and her husband, Bill, Patti Flanagan Cripps and her husband Randy; her five grandchildren, Sean Flanagan, Erin Gingerich, Julianne Cripps, Hannah Cripps and Meredith Cripps; and two great grandchildren. Friends may call starting at 10 a.m. Tues. Sept. 17, 2013 at the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, 1175 S. State St. Dover. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon at Holy Cross Church, 631 S. State St. Dover. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Dover. An appropriate way to celebrate her love of motherhood and nurturing spirit, family suggests donations to Mom's House, P.O. Box 1138, Dover, DE 19901 as Mom's House provides safe, secure, and free childcare to low-income single parents wishing to continue their education. The family would like to thank the loving and caring staff at Ware Presbyterian Village in Oxford, PA and Willow Tree Hospice of Kennett Square, PA for their tender care.
