CHESWOLD - Harold Bennett passed away June 9, 2013. Harold Bennett was born under a lucky star in Cheswold, Del., on July 6, 1925. He graduated from Caesar Rodney High School, where he excelled at baseball and football, and then went on to spend three years serving in the United States Navy during World War II. While in the Navy he taught illiterate recruits to read, traveled to China on an aircraft carrier, and honed his legendary skills as a card player. When he returned home to Delaware after the service, he married his beautiful high school sweetheart Norma (Harris) Bennett. He then attended and graduated from his parents alma mater, Bridgewater College in Virginia, with a major in U.S. History. In 1951, he began his forty-five year career with State Farm Insurance, during which he was awarded almost every sales honor the company offered, including attaining the rank of #1 auto insurance sales agent in the United States. He served for many years on the Caesar Rodney School Board, and on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Wyoming. He was a long-time member of both the Rehoboth and Maple Dale Country Clubs and enjoyed many afternoons playing golf and gin rummy with his buddies. He also loved to play bridge and hearts on the beach in Rehoboth with his wife, his brother Bob, and their tight-knit group of good friends. Throughout his life, Harold loved to travel, and he enjoyed many vacations spanning six continents. Harold especially liked his annual winter vacations to St. Thomas with friends and his trips to Florida and the Caribbean with his children and grandchildren. In recent years, he went on several memorable European river cruises with his wife and their children. Harold fought a long tough battle with cancer, but kept his winning attitude, sharp wits and playful sense of humor right up to the very last day of his life. He will be long remembered for his incredible toughness, optimism, good sportsmanship, generosity, and love for his family. Harold was preceded in death by his mother, Fleta Bennett; his father, Jacob Mayne Bennett; his brother, Robert (Bob) Bennett; and his sister, Dorothy Taylor. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Norma Harris Bennett; his daughter, Lynn Farina and her husband Patrick Farina; his son, Harold (Hal) Bennett Jr. and his wife Deborah Bennett; his grandchildren, Lee Dunham, Kathryn (Katie) Bennett and her husband Douglas Oswell, and Sean Bennett and his wife Stav Bennett; his first great-grandchild, Lila Rose Bennett; and his seven nieces and nephews.
