SMYRNA - Jack L. Achenbach passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 84 years old. Jack was born in Tipton, Ind. on Sept. 2, 1929 to the late Hallie R. and Jessie V. Achenbach. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Paul and his wife Glenda, and Kenneth and his wife Anita; and a brother-in-law, Albert Lemen. He is survived by his wife and friend of 34 years, Trudy; a sister, Peggy Lemen of IN; his children, Mark Achenbach (Robin) of Dover, Jessica Snow (Bruce) of Smyrna, and Jaclyn Grabowski (Matthew) of Dover; much beloved step children, Debra Bradley (Tom) of N.J., Paul Walker (Vicki) of Clayton, Cheryl Stark (Joseph) of NJ, and Michele Wash (David) of N.J.; 15 grandchildren, Dakota Achenbach, Jonathan (Whitney) and Benjamin (Rebecca) Snow, Kate, Jack and Ian Grabowski, Kelly and Devin Bradley, Brandon Walker (fiancée Alexis), Alec, Liam and Emma Stark, and James, Joelle and Kimberly Wash; 3 great grandchildren, Savannah, Wyatt and Declan Snow. He is also survived by his friend and niece, Beth Mundell; and nephews, Denny Lemen (Hazel), Candice Ryan (Michael), and Paul Achenbach (Vickie), all of Ind., and Vickie Seely (Chuck) of Colo.; and also many great nieces and nephews. Jack served as CMSGT in the USAF for 23 years. His most memorable assignment was serving as Maintenance Supervisor from 1961-1965 with the Thunderbirds. He also served his country in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a life member of VFW Post 8801 in Smyrna, where he served as Commander and held many other offices. He organized and founded the Honor Guard for Post 8801 in 1994 and they have attended nearly 600 military funerals. He was Postmaster of Odessa from 1979 to 1991 when he retired. He was a member of Ewell's St. Paul Church and was very active in church activities. He was also a member of the American Legion Post Number 14. A viewing for family and friends will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014 in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, DE. Funeral services will begin at 12:30 p.m. Burial with honors will be held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Ewell's St. Paul Methodist Church (please note stained glass windows in the memo line), PO Box 266, Clayton, DE 19938 or to the VFW Post 8801 Honor Guard, 4941 Wheatleys Pond Road Smyrna, DE 19977.
