Kathryn Sweatt Wilkinson

OKEECHOBEE - Kathryn Sweatt Wilkinson of Okeechobee passed away April 15, 2013. She was born March 4, 1925 in Okeechobee and was raised in Okeechobee. Mrs. Wilkinson was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church and sang in the church choir since she was 14 years old. She was also a member of the Community Choir. Her beautiful soprano voice was truly a gift from God. Many people would attend the Christmas Eve services just to hear her sing "O Holy Night". She attended, taught in and retired from the Okeechobee County School System. She was elected by her peer teachers as Okeechobee County Teacher of the Year for the school year 1976-1977. She was the first to have perfect attendance for all 12 years of school. She attended the University of Florida and graduated cum laude. She enjoyed reading, bird watching, crafts, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, traveling and spending time with her grandson, Patrick. Mrs. Wilkinson was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy Wilkinson; parents, Alvin and Sarah Sweatt; brother, G.L. Sweatt; sister, Alvyna Phillips; and nephew, Bruce Sweatt. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Rahl Wilkinson; daughter, Beth Lehman (Ed); brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Betty Sweatt; sister-in-law, Georgeanna Sweatt; brother-in-law, Jim Phillips; nine nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; and the light of her life, her grandson, Patrick Lehman. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Kathy Wilkinson Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Okeechobee Educational Foundation, 700 SW 2nd Avenue, Okeechobee FL 34974. A gathering will be held Saturday, April 20, 2013 from 11 a.m. until services at 12 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church.
