OKEECHOBEE - Roger L. Jones went peacefully to be with the Lord in his own home on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013 surrounded by his family. He was born in Illion, New York on March 9, 1919 to Irene and Lewis Jones. He graduated from Syracuse University and became a forest ranger before joining the US Air Force. He proudly served during World War II as a pilot and a pilot instructor. After World War II he and his wife, Mildred, moved to Okeechobee where he became an active member of our community. He and his wife were school teachers
in Okeechobee in the 1940's. They owned and operated M+Ranch cattle ranch and he still enjoyed riding out to the ranch to look at the cattle. They owned Okeechobee Trailer and Fishing Resort and Marina. Roger served as the Superintendent of Okeechobee County from 1948-1952. He also served on the School Board from 1972-1982, and on various community boards. He was a founding member of Church of Our Saviour, Episcopal, a member of the American Legion and was a past Master of the Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Mildred. He is survived by his son, Donald (Judy); and daughter, Toni Wiersma (Bill); he had four precious grandchildren, Helen Koch (Chris), Jo Anna Capp (Chris), Kendra Fairchild (Matt) and Nick Jones. Visitation will be held at Buxton & Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 from 4 to 6 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013 at Church of Our Saviour with the Reverend Dr. Edward Weiss officiating. Interment services will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to Okeechobee Educational Foundation - Scholarship Fund in his memory.
