OKEECHOBEE - Emily Howell Burdeshaw passed away on July 31, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. She was born Oct. 4, 1934 in Victoria, Texas to Jefferson Davis Howell, Sr. and Henrietta Hornburg Howell. In 1962, Emily left Texas and relocated to Okeechobee. She was of the Episcopal faith, and joined Church of Our Saviour in Okeechobee in 1968. She served many roles within the church including Cursillo.
Ms. Burdeshaw received her Bachelor of Education degree from Texas State University. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She would then further her education at Florida Atlantic University, where she earned her Masters of Education degree. For 35 years she enriched the young minds of the Okeechobee County School System as a 1st and 3rd grade elementary school teacher after teaching in Texas for six years. She felt it an honor and privilege to teach the children of Okeechobee for those many years.
Emily had a passion for the arts, and was a long time member of the Fine Arts Club. She loved music. From traditional to contemporary she enjoyed nearly every genre of music. Emily was also an avid book lover. Her favorites included exploring the past with historical biographies or a good mystery. She even had a taste for the theatrics. She enjoyed acting, and all things Broadway. Emily also found entertainment on the silver screen. She was fond of Hollywood's classics, musicals and was known for her obscure picks here and there.
Ms. Burdeshaw was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Kevin Burdeshaw; sisters, Jane Howell Miller and Joy Howell Cleveland; brother-in-law, Horace Cleveland.
She is survived by her daughter, Melanie Stinnett (Danny), of Okeechobee; brother, Lt. General Jefferson Davis Howell, Jr., Ret. USMC (Janel), of Austin, Texas; brother-in-law, James A. Miller, of Hot Springs, Ark.; former husband and constant friend, Ben Burdeshaw (Judy), of Okeechobee; caregiver and friend, Debbie Fetterolf, of Okeechobee; and daughter-in-law, Carolyn Burdeshaw, of West Palm Beach.
Affectionately known as 'Happy' she is also survived by her granddaughters, Ashley Pareja (Jimmy), of Valrico, Rachel Trent (John), of Okeechobee, and Jackie McHellon (Bryan), of West Palm Beach; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Pareja, Andrew Pareja, Sophia Pareja, Jase Trent, Reid Trent, Jaxon McHellon, and Amelia McHellon.
The family will hold memorial services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018 at the Church of Our Saviour with The Reverend Jim Shevlin officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Okeechobee or Church of Our Saviour.
