Okeechobee - Haywood Ephraim Ward died April 28, 2018. He was a native of North Carolina, having been born to Vernon L. Ward and Mary Elizabeth Morris Ward in New Hope. He spent almost all of his life in Moyock at his farm on Tulls Creek Road.
Haywood lived a very interesting and storied life. He was a veteran having served in the North Carolina National Guard. He farmed full time and then part time until a few years ago. He was Currituck County's first animal control officer and he served as a Sheriff's Deputy for 25 years under Sheriff Newbern, Sheriff Brinkley, and Sheriff Johnson. He started and ran Sunshine Produce, as well as F & W Land Development.
He loved riding his Harley Davidson and carried the host club's flag to lead the ride at the statewide Harley Owners Group Rally held in 2007 on the Outer Banks. Family and friends will certainly miss the almost nightly country meals he prepared in his man cave. He leaves his family of friends at the "Big O" RV Park, Buck Ridge Market, and Kitty Hawk RV Park in North Carolina. He is gone from our presence, but lives in our hearts.
He leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Cynthia Maddox Ward; three sons, Haywood Ward, Jr., Vernon Ward, and JJ Snellinger; two daughters, Cindy Ward Pollock and Nicole Page, all of Moyock, North Carolina; fifteen grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Elizabeth Chappell and Mary Vernon Sadler.
Services are not planned.
