OKEECHOBEE - Larry Eugene Smith, surrounded by his loving family peacefully went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at his home. Larry was born Dec. 29, 1940 in Durand, Mich. to Harry and Mabel (nee' Strong) Smith. Though he was originally from Michigan he always considered himself a lifelong resident of Okeechobee. It was in Okeechobee on Sept. 14, 1962 that he married the love of his life Barbara (Davis). Before God and family the two renewed their vows in 2012 on their 50th wedding anniversary. In their 55 years of marriage Larry and Barbara have been blessed with six children, fifteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Larry worked construction for 52 years. In 1983, he began working for Ric-Man International and "retired" in 2011 as the Super Intendent of Underground Construction. Larry never officially retired though because he still did consulting work, and his time was never idle. He had a passion for working the land, and reaping its many blessings. Whether he was tending to his cattle, or farming Larry was one with the land. Larry could not be tamed or tethered to this Earth. He owned two Cessna 182s and loved to soar through the sky while witnessing God's splendor. Larry was of an analytical mind, and there was no problem too big or task too small that could not be thought out and overcome. From building his house or rebuilding an engine Larry was a perfectionist to a fault, but expected nothing less. He was also an accomplished woodworking craftsman. Larry truly was the salt of the Earth and his loving nature, honesty and integrity will be sorely missed.
Larry was a member of Okeechobee Church of God. He put his God first, his family second and work third.
He is survived by his wife of 55 incredible years, Barbara; son, Jeff Smith (Lynn) of Kiln, Miss.; daughters, Beth Reynolds (Merle Carson) of Okeechobee, Shawn Prior of Lake Wales, Stephanie D'Andrea (Aaron) of West Palm, Charity Turpin (Tommy) of Duluth, Ga. and Malinda Kopec (Joe) of Swartz Creek, Mich. Though he cherished his children Larry was a loving and devoted PaPa. He had the unique gift of making each of his 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren feel special in their own way. He also leaves behind his sister, Vivian Smith; and his rat terrier, Midget; and grand dachshund-pitbull mix, Shamba.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Edwin, Kenneth, Donny and Lynn.
The family will celebrate Larry's remarkable life on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 4 p.m. at Buxton and Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home with Brother John Rhoden officiating. The family has implemented a strict dress code on Larry's behalf. Please dress casually, comfortably and DO NOT wear a suit.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Okeechobee, PO Box 1548, Okeechobee, FL 34973.
