Okeechobee – Leslie "Les" Owen Tory died April 27, 2018, at Central Florida Regional Hospital. He was born in New Boston, Iowa, on March 12, 1926, to Frank and Grace (Hamilton) Tory.
Les loved his family, friends, and fishing. He was devoted to his family and the first to offer a helping hand. He had a big smile, an infectious laugh and always carried a mug of coffee.
An electrician, he retired from Jan Electric and has been retired for 30 years. Les enjoyed tinkering with electronics and computers. He and his twin brother would sit late into the night discussing technology. Les also loved to play and host card parties.
A seasonal resident to the area for thirty years, he moved from Illinois to Michigan and eventually to Okeechobee permanently, so he could fish year around. He made many friends in his years fishing Lake Okeechobee. As an active member of the Beeline Bass Club, at age 90 he was awarded the Angler of the Year Award, setting a record for the highest tournament wins in the club's history.
Les was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Florence Tory; sons, Greg, and Paul Tory; sisters, Ina Hayes, Iris Beall, Nancy Sansome and Joyce Tory.
He is survived by a son, Phillip Tory (Ella); daughter, Cindy Tory (Martin Hernandez); grandchildren, Kim, Leslie, Cheryl, Christopher, and Kaitlin; brothers, Lester Tory, Bryce Tory (Elaine), Will Tory (Dim) and Doyle Tory (Loretta); sister, Carol Hoffman (Bob); daughter-in-law, Debbie Tory; companion, Mary Skjordal; 8 great grandchildren; and over 50 nieces and nephews.
