OKEECHOBEE - Margaret Christina Swabey Smith was born in Columbus, Ohio on Jan. 24, 1925. She traveled with her mother, Ada E. Swabey, father, William A. Swabey and sister, Mary E Swabey (all preceded in death) to Hollywood, Fla. In 1942, she married Walter Lee Smith Jr. (preceded in death, married 62 yrs.) and they had three children, Peggy Ann Smith Fulp Martinez (Ft. Myers), William Lee Smith (preceded in death) and Marci Christina Smith Downing Boswell (Okeechobee). She was a homemaker and seamstress before retiring to live in Okeechobee in 1988 (resided in Okeechobee for 30 yrs.).
Margaret passed away on Sunday, July 8, 2018 at the age of 93, she had an indomitable spirit to live and fought a brave battle with congestive heart failure. Her work here is now done and she has been called to quilt, sew, garden, and be reunited with family and friends that she has not seen in a while.
She was a member of the Okeechobee First United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star #128 (Past Matron Okeechobee Chapter #128 and Hollywood Chapter #150 along with Past Grand Representative to Maine), Order of Amaranth, Okeechobee Historical Society, Tantie Quilters and Daughters of the American Revolution. Margaret was a tireless and selfless volunteer for many organizations that she held close to her heart, including the Okeechobee Shrine Club.
Margaret will be lovingly remembered by many family members and friends, including David Boswell (Okeechobee), Marguerite C. Smith (St Pete), Betty Jo Weidner (Coral Springs), Paul L. Smith (Lynhaven), Sally Taylor (Ft. Lauderdale), Patsy Black, Bettyjo Caudill, Molly Johnson and Terry Hoehne (Okeechobee); her grandchildren, Kimberly A. Nodzak, Robert G. Fulp (Ft. Lauderdale), Rebecca M. Fulp (Las Vegas, Nev.), William L. Smith Jr., Micheala Coffin (St Pete), Amanda L. Downing Cooper, Shawn Cooper (Orlando); seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mom used to say that the one with the most fabric at the end wins. Along with her many ribbons for quilts at the Okeechobee County Fair, we believe she may have won for the most fabric as well. Blessed are the family and friends of the piece makers for they will inherit the quilts.
In memory of our Mom, make time to treasure your mom as the end does not wait until you have time. Also, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Order of the Eastern Star #128 or any of the organizations that mom held close to her heart.
Margaret's life will be celebrated at Buxton & Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home, 400 N. Parrott Avenue, Okeechobee, FL 34972 on Friday, July 13, 2018 with visitation from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Order of the Eastern Star services at 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and religious services on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 11 a.m., with Pastor Don Hanna officiating.
