OKEECHOBEE - Ruthie Lee Thomas died at the Hamrick Home on Friday, June 7, 2013. She was the daughter of John and Zula Altman, born November 21, 1925, in Canal Point, Fla. As a child she had a fondness for the outdoors, wildlife and nature that was prevalent around Canal Point and Basinger. After raising her family in Pahokee 20 years ago, she moved to Okeechobee. She was a member of Okeechobee Missionary Baptist Church. She loved to read her Bible, go to church and work in her yard with her flowers and plants. She also enjoyed baking and was known for her Easter Cakes. Ruthie was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Thomas; sons, Dale and Stephen Thomas; brother, Frances Altman; sisters, Ruby Mills, Adine Rayburn and Geneva Roland. Survivors include daughters, Patricia (Lester) Williams of Okeechobee, Carol (Steve) Ricketts of Lake Wales, Mary (Scott) Venters of Ft. Lauderdale; two grandsons, Kevin (Katharine) Williams of Okeechobee and Alexander (Michelle) Ricketts of St. Augustine; one granddaughter, Emily (Matthew) Davis of Jacksonville, Fla.; four great-grandchildren, Rachel and Hannah Williams and Tyler and Camdyn.; one brother, Dan (Wanda) Altman of Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters, Hazel (James L.) Johnson of Zolfo Springs, Joanne (R.L.) Dyal of Arcadia, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at Buxton-Seawinds Funeral Home at 10 a.m. with the service following at 11 a.m. with Rev. Charles Thornton of Lakeland Seminary officiating. Burial will follow at Port Mayaca Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Ruthie's name may be made to Hospice of Okeechobee, P.O. Box 1548, Okeechobee, Florida 34973.
