George McComas Obituary

CAMBRIDGE - George W. McComas, Sr., 83 of Cambridge, passed away at his home on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011. He was born in Washington, D.C. on August 17, 1927, and was a son of the late Harry Gough and Martha Elizabeth Neely McComas, Sr. He attended schools in Washington and also attended Massanutten Military Academy and graduated from Veterans High School in Washington. Mr. McComas enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 31, 1944, and had served in Germany and was honorably discharged January 28, 1947. On July 31, 1948, he was married to the former Margaret Beall. They had made their home in Cambridge since 1950. Mrs. McComas passed away on May 5, 1996. Mr. McComas operated the McComas Oil Co. in Cambridge from 1960 until he retired in June of 1996. He was a member of Dorchester Post # 91 American Legion and Choptank Memorial Post # 7460. He was also a 60 year member of Cambridge Lodge No. 66 A.F. & A.M., Past President of the Dorchester Archers Club, Past President of the Cambridge Optimist Club, Past Commander of the Cambridge Power Squadron as well as a Past Commodore of the Cambridge Yacht Club. Mr. McComas had been a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge since April 14, 1957. He enjoyed boating, loved playing bridge with the ladies at the Cambridge MAC Center. Mr. McComas enjoyed going to lunch with the Good Times Club. He was stricken suddenly at his home on Tuesday evening where he passed away. Survivors include two daughters, Olivia Schunick and her husband Leslie of Cambridge and Martha E. Webster and her husband Rev. Daniel Webster of South Fork, Pa.; four sons, George W. McComas, Jr. of Cambridge, Richard E. McComas and his wife Dinah of Vicksburg, Miss., Henry C. McComas of Cambridge and Leroy H. McComas and his wife Kaye McComas of Cambridge. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one brother, Joseph Lance McComas of Tampa, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy McComas; and a brother Harry Gough McComas, Jr. Members of Cambridge Lodge No. 66 A.F. & A.M. will conduct a Masonic Memorial Service at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. This will be followed by a memorial service which will be conducted by Rev. Daniel Webster. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.
