Dr. Richard J. Apell

Apell, Dr. Richard J. Dr. Richard J. Apell, age 90 passed away on May 30, 2012. Dr. Apell was born in Chicago, Ill. on April 15, 1922 to the late Gertrude (Halversen) and Jacob M. Apell. Dr. Apell is survived by his wife Dorothy (Olsen) Apell; son Richard J. Apell Jr. and his wife Frances; daughter Karen A. Beebe and her husband Michael; grandchildren Michael J. Beebe and his wife Sarah, Jason R. Beebe and his wife Jen, Bryan R. Apell; and his great grandchildren Olivia Lynn Beebe, Jason R. Beebe Jr., and twins Jillian Hope and Jordan Faith Beebe. Dr. Apell served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. In 1947 he graduated with a Doctor of Optometry Degree from Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. Dr. Apell was an Instructor for the Child Vision Research Project at Yale University in New Haven from 1949 to 1950. From 1950 until 1990, Dr Apell was the Head of the Optometric Department of the Gesell Institute of Human Development in New Haven. Dr. Apell was an avid golfer and a member of Madison Country Club for many years. Friends and family are invited to attend a graveside service on Saturday, June 2 at 11:00 am at Alderbrook Cemetery on Boston St. in Guilford.
