LUCILLE MAPP Obituary

Lucille Little Mapp of Branford, CT, died peacefully during the morning of March 15, 2015. Lucille was a devoted wife of 63 years to her husband, Edward F. Mapp, and a loving and model mom to her two children, Karen L. Mapp of Boston, MA and Kevin F. Mapp of Oakland, CA. Lucille was born in Norfolk, VA to the Rev. Henry C. Little and Carrie R. Little of Ansonia, CT. Lucille began a lifetime love of music as a member of the Ansonia Clinton AME Zion Church Fife, Drum and Bugle Corp as well as a member of the church choir. Throughout her life, Lucille participated in several choral organizations, including the Church of the Redeemer Choral, The Heritage Chorale of New Haven, and since 1951, the St. Luke's Church Choir. In the late 1940's, Lucille toured with jazz greats such as Johnny Griffin and Joe Morris, and performed with Horace Silver. Lucille was a frequent lead singer at clubs in New Haven such as Lillian's Paradise and the Recorder Club. In addition to her love of music, Lucille was a lifelong learner. Lucille graduated from Ansonia High School, and after raising her family and retiring from thirty years of employment at the Southern New England Telephone Company, she returned to school and earned an associates degree with honors in 1993 from Gateway Community College and graduated in 1996 from Southern Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In addition to pursuing her own education, Lucille served as an education mentor to students in the New Haven Public Schools. Lucille was a dedicated member of St. Luke's Church: in addition to the choir, she was a charter member and past president of the St. Theresa's Guild, was a member of the organ fund committee, and served as the co-chair of the Sunshine Committee of the Episcopal Church Women's (ECW) group. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by her nephew, Leon Walker (Gloria) as well as two nieces, Ericka Walker and Janet Walker. Lucille was predeceased by her sister, Isabelle Anderson of New Haven, CT and her nephew, Bryant Walker of Sacramento, CA. Her memory will be cherished by her extended Ansonia family, as well as her many relatives, friends and neighbors, both here and abroad.
Services will be held on Saturday, (TODAY) March 21st, 9 am at St. Luke's Church, 111 Whalley Avenue, New Haven, CT. Viewing will begin at 8:00AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00AM. Mr. Mapp, Karen and Kevin. Let's first thank to God for his goodness in sending Lucille to be your loving wife and mother. In the short time that I've know the family, I found Lucille to be a warm person, not just because of our mutual love of jazz, but rather by her calm spirit. Words can't express my sorrow for your loss, but rest assured that there is a bright place waiting for Lucille. Her spirit will live on, because of the joy she brought your family and the fond memories which you share. Know that many are thinking about and praying for you. Those prayers will strengthen you in the coming days and keep you moving ahead. Peace and love to all of you. Archie

So sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of meeting your family years ago when you moved in 2 doors down from my parents home. I also had the pleasure of spending time with Kevin waiting for the school bus and watching him when he was young. Your wife and mom was a wonderful woman, very friendly, nice and a great neighbor.
Sincerely,
