Gloria Buonocore Ph.D.

Gloria P. Buonocore, 89, of New Haven passed away on Sept. 3, 2017 after several years of declining health. Born in New Haven, CT, she was the daughter of Alfredo and Maddalena Buonocore Petraiuolo. Dr. Buonocore was pre-deceased by her brother, Guido Petraiuolo, and her loving aunts to whom she was devoted and with whom she lived most of her life: Giovanna, Vincenzina, Liduina and Michelina Buonocore. Dr. Buonocore was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, Albertus Magnus College (B.A.) and Yale University (M.A.). For her doctorate in philosophy, she specialized in the theory of meaning. Her doctoral dissertation was entitled: "An Approach to Linguistic Signs and Their Designata". Dr. Buonocore was a committed educator and enjoyed engaging her college students in thought provoking conversation. She taught philosophy at several colleges in Connecticut, including Albertus Magnus, Fairfield University, the University of Connecticut and the University of Hartford. Early in her career, she worked as an assistant cataloguer of Latin books at Sterling Memorial Library at Yale. She is survived by her nephew, Guido Petra and his wife, Diane, of Guilford; her niece, Marilyn Douglas and her husband, Craig, of Cromwell; a grandniece and nephews, many cousins but especially, Resty Melaccio. Special thanks are given to Patricia Handy who was a kind and compassionate companion and caregiver. Calling hours will be on Saturday September 9, 2017 from 9 to 10:30am at MARESCA & SONS FUNERAL HOME 592 Chapel Street, New Haven. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Michael Church, 29 Wooster Place, New Haven at 11 am.
