Alexander Monko Obituary
Alexander Monko, 89, of Lincolnshire, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018 in Libertyville. He was born March 4, 1928 and was a graduate of the Yale University College of Engineering. He worked for many years and retired from Armstrong Rubber Company/Pirelli Tire. He previously lived in Branford, CT for most of his life. A resident of Sedgebrook, Alex was actively involved in the Catholic Council.
Surviving are two children, A. Michael (Christy) Monko of Carlsbad, CA and Meg (Scott) Pucino of Libertyville; seven Grandchildren, Michael, Sarah and Matthew Ruggieri, Joey and Danny Pucino, Kate and Alex Monko; three Great Grandchildren, Elizabeth, Keegan and Brody Ruggieri and his son-in-law, David Ruggieri.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lydia Monko and by his daughter Mary Beth Ruggieri.
The family would like to acknowledge Dr. David Slivnick and Nurse Lisa Cassebolt of North Shore Oncology and Dr. Elliott Kroger for the wonderful care given to Alex in the last years of his life.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018 at the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, 120 W. Park Ave. (Rt. 176, one block west of Milwaukee Ave.) Libertyville. Prayers will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home followed by funeral mass at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 121 E. Maple, Libertyville. Interment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery. It was my privilege to assist Father George Dyer at Mass at Sedgebrook, and part of that privilege was getting to know Alex Monko. He was a true gentleman. A leader in the Catholic community at Sedgebrook, he led by serving and making others feel welcome. No matter what life was throwing at him, he was always able to greet others with a smile and be attentive to their situations. I last saw Alex last month when he was visiting Father Dyer in the hospital. Mr. Monko was a true gentleman. I do not believe I ever saw him when he was not serving others. I will miss him.
