Obituary Condolences

MacDOUGALL, ALLENA Allena MacDougall, age 92, of Hamden, passed away on June 1, 2014. Born in West Haven on July 6, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Toms Paight & Mabel Elizabeth Seigelbaum Paight. Allena was an avid gardener, animal lover and an American patriot through and through. In recent years she became a Member of The Daughters of the American Revolution. After graduating from West Haven High School in 1939, she opened up The Donut Shop on Dixwell Avenue in Hamden with her husband; this was one of the first in CT. After closing the business in the 1970’s, she became an Executive Secretary for the University of New Haven. Upon her retirement from UNH she went on to work at the Hamden Chronicle as a reporter and then taught for many years at The Whitneyville Congregational Nursery School. Allena is the mother of Kevin B. MacDougall of Hamden and the late Marlee L. Paolillo & Detra J. MacDougall; grandmother of Adrenna D’Orlando, Andrew Paolillo, Dominic Paolillo, Kevin B. MacDougall II and Corrine DeVincentis; sister of Minnie Valente of FL & the late Mabel Burnham & Joseph Paight. She also leaves six great-grandchildren. Friends may attend her Funeral Service on Thursday, June 5 at 10:00 AM in Whitneyville Congregational Church, 1253 Whitney Ave, Hamden, and may visit with her family on Wednesday from 4 to 7 PM at BEECHER & BENNETT FUNERAL HOME, 2300 Whitney Ave, Hamden. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Allena’s memory may be made to the CT Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd., Newington, CT 06111.
