ACKERMAN, DENA NEWMAN Dena Newman Ackerman, 88, long-time resident of Milford, CT and New York, N.Y., passed away Sept. 27, 2012. She was born in Bronx, N.Y., on Oct. 30, 1923, to the late Louie and Gertrude Newman. Dena received a Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy from the New York University. She was the wife to the late Dr. Jerome Ackerman and mother to the late Corwin Ackerman. The mother of five sons, she was a very talented gourmet chef who studied under James Beard and Florence Lin. She loved to entertain and show off her culinary skills. Dena was an avid patron of the arts and a skilled sculptor. She was a student of the famed sculptor Alexander Archipenko. Dena was a world traveler, who leaves behind her loving Antiguan family. She worked for many years as a teacher in Manhattan for troubled and disadvantaged young women. She taught her students in a real-life environment to run a consignment shop, where they learned invaluable business and life skills. Dena is survived by her beloved cousin and friend Estelle Feinmark, and her four sons: Andrew, Thomas, Mitchell and James. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
