PLEINES, DONALD R. " POP-POP" Donald R. "Pop-Pop" Pleines, 86, died Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at his home in Branford. He was the husband of the late Teresia Cronin Pleines. Mr. Pleines was born May 19, 1926 in New Haven, a son of the late Carl and Ann Shanahan Pleines. He served in the U. S. Army in WW II in the South Pacific, and was part of the rebuilding of Japan after the war. He was a member of the American Legion Post 83 in Branford. He worked for 25 years at Armstrong Rubber in New Haven. He was a founding member of the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven. Mr. Pleines was an avid fisherman, who built his own fishing poles, was a NASCAR fan, and was a fan of the NY Mets. He is survived by his children, Thomas A. Pleines of Branford, Catherine (Scott) Behler of East Haven, and Joseph M. Pleines of Tampa, FL. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and his devoted friend and caregiver, Roger. Besides his wife, Mr. Pleines was predeceased by his children, Donald R. Pleines, Jr., Aline S. Pleines, and James K. Pleines; his brother, Carl T. Pleines and his sister, Elizabeth Hawkin. His family would like to thank the girls from Hospice Home Care for the compassion and devotion shown to Donald and his family these past weeks. His funeral procession will leave the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St., Branford, Tuesday morning at 10:00 am for a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Church at 10:30. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery.
