Edwina Zanes Obituary

Zanes, Edwina Atteridge Edwina Atteridge Zanes, of Madison, CT, age 94, passed away on Tuesday, April 30. Edwina was born October 16, 1918 in Peace Dale, Rhode Island, the oldest of five children of the late Richard H. and Edwina C. Atteridge. She was graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1940 with a major in Home Economics. Her first job, after college, was at Gimbles Department Store in Manhattan. She then worked for Good Housekeeping Magazine as Food Editor. After marrying Robert Parker Zanes, Jr., MD in 1947, the couple moved to Columbus Ohio where she was the host of Mrs. Zanes' Kitchen, a cooking show on WBNS TV. In 1951 they moved to Connecticut, living in Woodbridge, North Haven, and then Madison, where she raised her three children and spent most of the next 60 years volunteering for various community organizations. When in her 60s she began substitute teaching in the Guilford, Madison, and Portland school systems. Mrs. Zanes was a parishioner and an active volunteer at St. Margaret's Roman Catholic Church in Madison. She was also active with the Visiting Nurse Association in both North Haven and Madison, on the Board of Trustees at The Hammonasset School, the Advisory Board at the Mercy Center at Madison and on the Board of Governors at the Madison Beach Club. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining, being around people, and lending a helping hand wherever needed. She will be remembered for her good heart, kindness, and sense of humor. Edwina is survived by her children, Robert P. "Terry" Zanes, III and his wife Linda of Guilford; Edwina "Pooch" Simmons of Torrington; Richard A. Zanes and his partner Kyle Peaslee of Milwaukee, her favorite grandson, Robert A. Simmons, Jr. of Osterville, MA, a special niece, Beth Hinman and her husband Jeff, of Eustis, ME, as well as 12 nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a brother, Richard H. Atteridge, Jr. and his wife Myrtle; brother-in-law, Raymond Chapman; and sister-in-law, Priscilla Buckley and her husband William.
