Gretchen Flanagan Obituary

FLANAGAN, GRETCHEN RUTH (WILLIAMS) Gretchen Ruth Flanagan (Williams), 35, of Northford, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014. She was born to Ronald Williams and Carol Ledogar, Jan. 1, 1979, in New Haven, CT. Gretchen was raised in Northford where she met and married her high school sweetheart Kevin Flanagan in 2004. After high school, Gretchen spent several years as a talented makeup artist who used her artistry to help people look and feel beautiful. Upon the birth of her daughter, Gretchen devoted herself to motherhood. Known and respected for her ‘big heart’ and loving compassion, Gretchen was passionate about making a difference in the lives of others. She selflessly registered to be an organ donor, and in her death, heroically offered her heart and other organs to save several lives. Gretchen is survived by her four year old daughter, Gianna Jeanne Calabrese. She also is survived by her parents, stepmother Jana Williams, and nine siblings: Carol Kyler; Ronald Williams, II; Barbara Yeager; Maureen Watson; Jeanne Williams; Lisa Purificato; Sonia Klein; Jessica Turcio; and, James Turcio. Gretchen was an aunt to her siblings 17 children: Dennis Royka; Ronald Williams, III; Samantha Williams; Travis Williams; Amber Williams; Ray Genty; Joseph Yeager; Abbey Johnson; Sarah Pilcher; Joseph Williams; Meghan Purificato; Anthony Purificato; Anaelecea Turcio; Luciana Gagliardi; Anthony Gagliardi; Zander Klein; and Zoe Klein. Her family has established a fund account at Bank of America for Gretchen’s daughter Gianna under the guardianship of her sister Sonia Klein. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to this account (c/o Sonia Klein). A private ceremony for close family and friends will be held this Sunday.

" When I could show someone how to make themselves feel confident and beautiful- that was why I loved working at nordstrums"- gretchen explained to me

She never understood how beautiful she was, and always ran from the camera. You will not find her in any year book , she stayed home on picture day.

She had empathy for everyone, never saying a bad word. When O.J was brought she would hear that he might have been guilt. As a little girl she told me ,that when Sammy Davis junior died she cried and cried.
Now this is funny. After a movie she would make me sit while she read all the credits ," because they probably worked hard, they should all get credit." While frustrating as she singing the praises of Key grip no.5. It was exact what made me love her more.

Gretchen wrote about Gia constantly , and would put Gia written everywhere .

Forever....Auntie Kathy

April 13, 2014

Do not stand by my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am a diamond glint on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awake in the morning hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight
I am the soft starshine at night.
Do not stand by by grave and cry
I am not there...I did not die.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
