Obituary Condolences

COSTIN, JOHN P. JR. John P. Costin, Jr., 87, of Swampscott, formerly of Bethany, CT and New Port Richey, FL, passed away Saturday at Connecticut Hospice, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Joan M. (Groves) Costin, with whom he shared nearly 63 years of marriage. He was the son of the late John P. Costin, Sr. and the late Madeline (Morrisey) Costin. He was a graduate of Swampscott High School, and was a member of the Big Blue Football team. He lived in Bethany, CT for many years, then retired to New Port Richey, FL, eventually returning to his place of birth, Swampscott, MA, which he referred to as “Town Beautiful”. John proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II, and in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, his career as a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation lasted for 30 years. After retiring from the FBI, he began work as a Senior Investigator for Special Revenue for the State of Connecticut, and finally took his last position with Background Investigation Contractor Services (BICS) in the Tampa and Boston offices of the FBI. In addition, he and his wife, Joan were also co-owners of Bethany Wine Shop in CT. John was a member of numerous organizations including the Elks Club, the American Legion, the Marine Corps League, the Society of Former Federal Agents, and the Bethany Lions Club, where he served as President. He served on the Board of Finance for the Town of Bethany, and also belonged to the Second Company of the Governors Horse Guard in CT, where he worked up to the rank of Commandant. He had an extreme love of animals, especially horses. He loved all types of music and Irish culture, was an avid reader, and enjoyed many crossword puzzles. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his 6 children; Karen Pressler (Felix), John P. Costin III, Patricia Staffa (Gary), James Costin, Kevin Costin, NHPD Retired (Anna), and Mary Murray (Tom); 9 grandchildren; Bob Donahue, Michelle Staffa, Brittany Guerra, Nicole, Kristen and Joseph Pressler, and Kelly, Colleen and Cristina Costin; 3 great-grandchildren; Makayla, Joseph and Caleb; his brother; Philip Costin (Olive); as well as many nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Queen Elizabeth “Lizzy”. He was the brother of the late Jacqueline Marino, Gertrude Galland and Donald Costin. The family would also like to thank all of the caring nurses and health care workers who have cared for him throughout the past two years. His funeral will be held on Friday at 9AM from the SOLIMINE FUNERAL HOME, 67 Ocean St. (Rt 1A), Lynn, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott at 10AM. Burial will be in Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Thursday from 4-8PM.
