BRUNO, JOSEPH F. Joseph F. Bruno, 92, of Tampa, Florida, formerly of Hamden, passed away on May 26, 2014 at Manor Care in Palm Harbor, Florida. He was the beloved husband of Agnes Lohrstorfer Bruno. Joe was born in New Haven in 1922, son of the late A. James and Madeline Mele Bruno. He attended Hamden High School, where he played football and basketball, received a football scholarship to Providence College in RI, and graduated in 1944. He also earned a masters degree in Education. After serving as Director of Recreation in Branford, he became a three sport coach and Director of Athletics at Eastland Jr/Sr High School in Roseville, Michigan. In 1947 he returned to Hamden High School as a Biology teacher and football coach, becoming the Director of Athletics in 1959. He began the Hamden-Notre Dame Greenbowl game on Thanksgiving Day, a tradition that continues to this day. After retiring in 1982, he was named Athletic Director of the year by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association and New England Athletic Director of the year by the National High School Coaches Association. Other awards included the New Haven Gridiron Club Hall of Fame and the Connecticut High School Coaches Hall of Fame. In 2010 the Hamden High School Athletic Field was renamed the Joseph F. Bruno Field. He was also active in the Hamden Rotary Club, served as President in 1976, and received the Forty Year Award from Rotary International in 2007. Joe was blessed with a wonderful family of six children, Janet (Robert) Kazdan, Joann (Thomas) Baer, Thomas (Michele), James (Elaine), Mark (Carolyn) Bruno, 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Joseph F. Bruno Jr. (Rita) and a sister, Jayne (Frank) Cavaliere. A memorial mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Ascension in Hamden on June 27, at 10 AM. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery in North Haven.
