MOONEY, JOHN FRANCIS John Francis Mooney, 83, of Hamden, passed away Wednesday after a brief illness. John was born on June 4, 1930 in New Haven. He worked for Pratt & Whitney, and proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a long-time member of the Hamden Elks Club, VFW, American Legion, Knights of St. Patrick, and Irish-American Gaelic Club. He enjoyed golfing, particularly with his brother Thomas Mooney and many nephews and nieces. He was co-founder of the Mooney Open, an annual family golf competition. He served as a coach for Little League Baseball in New Haven and the Hamden Fathers’ Baseball Association. He won several honors including Elk of the Year. He cheered on his favorite professional and college teams: New York Yankees and Giants, and Georgetown. He is survived by siblings Marie O’Dell of Seymour; twin Ann Rushley of Columbus, Ohio; Margaret Barone, Lillian (Thomas) Moore and Thomas (Barbara) Mooney, all of Hamden, and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by parents William and Margaret Mooney, brother William Mooney, and brothers-in-law Gene Rushley, Carl Barone and James O’Dell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Rita’s Church, 1620 Whitney Ave. Hamden. Friends are asked to go directly to church. Burial in All Saints Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday from 3-7 p.m. in Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney Ave. , Hamden.
