Julius Leon Podheiser Obituary
PODHEISER, JULIUS LEON Julius Leon Podheiser ("Julie"), beloved husband of Thelma ("Temmy"), died on July 19, 2012, after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer. In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his brother, Albert Podheiser, of Hamden, his children, Linda Podheiser of Cambridge, MA, James Podheiser and his wife, Nancy Axelrod, of Haddonfield, NJ, and four grandchildren, Alexandra Shaw, and Lucy, Daniel and Miriam Podheiser. Born in Brooklyn in 1921, Julie grew up in West Haven and attended Yale University, graduating in 1943. After serving in the army during WWII, Julie returned home to work in the family business, and with his brother, ran New Haven Lumber until he retired. He met Temmy when she came into the lumber yard, loved her violet eyes (they were green - he was color blind). After they married, they lived in West Haven and Woodbridge moving to Hamden twenty-seven years ago. Julie and Temmy celebrated their 65th anniversary on December 22, 2011, having not been apart from the day of their marriage except when one of them was in the hospital. Julie loved books, arguments, and Italian opera, exercised, took vitamins and ate mindfully before it was popular, but his marriage and extended family were the center of his life. He was an attentive, caring, and thoughtful husband, son, sibling and grandparent, and a wonderful friend. Everyone who knew him will miss him very much and every day. Funeral Service at Cong. B'nai Jacob, 75 Rimmon Rd., Woodbridge, was SUNDAY afternoon at 4:00 o'clock with interment services at the B'nai Jacob Memorial Park, Wintergreen Ave., New Haven. Memorial contributions may be sent to Smilow Cancer Hospital @ Yale New Haven Hospital, Development Office, 20 York St., New Haven, Ct 06519, or to Masonicare, 22 Masonic Ave., P.O. Box 70, Wallingford, Ct 06492. A period of mourning will be held at 865 Mix. Ave., Hamden, Apt. 510, thru Tuesday from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. The Robert E. Shure Funeral Home is in care of arrangements. www.shurefuneralhome.com
