Curtin, Lawrence J. Capt. Lawrence J. Curtin, USN (ret.), 90, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Feb. 20, 2013, in Coronado, CA. A native of Naugatuck, Larry joined the Navy at age 17 upon his graduation from Naugatuck High, and was selected from the fleet to attend the Naval Academy from which he graduated in 1946. His adventures brought him back to Connecticut from 1971-1980 where he served as Commander of the Naval and Marine Corps. Training Center at Fort Nathan Hale in New Haven. He and his family lived during that time in Madison, where two of his sons, Stephen and Gregory, graduated from Daniel Hand High, and his youngest daughter Victoria completed elementary school at Our Lady of Mercy. Larry enjoyed 47 years of marriage with the love of his life, Nadine Sherwood, until her death in 1992. He is survived by his sister, Nora Barth of Naugatuck, CT; six children, John of Shell Beach, Calif., Nicholas of Valencia, Calif., Lisa Abrahams of Truckee, Calif., Stephen of Tucson, Ariz., Gregory of Los Angeles, Calif., Victoria Imsirovic of Newport Beach, Calif.; and 12 grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 1, at Sacred Heart Church in Coronado, Calif. The family suggests donations to St. Vincent de Paul Village in San Diego, Calif.
