McCARTHY, LORETTA E. DUNN In Meriden, August 8, 2013, Loretta Eleanor Dunn McCarthy, 90, of Ashlar Village, Wallingford, formerly of Hellstrom Road and then Silver Sands Road of East Haven. Wife of 52 years of the late Francis S. "Mac" McCarthy. Sister of William L. (Jane) Dunn of Clinton & sister-in-law of Margaret Boyce Dunn of East Providence, RI. Mother of Francis S. [FBI-ret] (Maureen) McCarthy of North Branford, Loretta E. (Dr. Mark) Decker of West Chester, PA, Merita A. (Bruce) Valoris of Centreville, VA, Nadine M.(Robert) Hull of Orange, PS1 Brian J. McCarthy [USN-ret] of East Haven, and Kevin J. [EHPD-ret] (Denise) McCarthy of West Haven. Grandmother of Ensign Brendan USN, PO Patrick USPP, Caitlin, Meghan, Michaela, Matthew, Thomas & Jamie McCarthy, Joshua (Vandana) Decker & Melissa Decker, Kelly (Joshua) Valoris Price, William Valoris, & Meredith F. (Alan) Mastrangelo & Margaret Hull. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Bridget Frances McCarthy, her brother, Daniel J. Dunn and sisters, Anna E. Dunn, Elizabeth I. Arcand & Lt Col Jane F. Dunn USAF. Loretta was born in New Haven, March 6, 1923, daughter of the late Jeremiah F. (NHFD) & M. Loretta Cavanaugh Dunn. She was a graduate of Hillhouse High School, Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Portland, ME & UConn. She was a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) and Registered Physical Therapist ( RPT ). She served as an Ensign in the US Navy Nurse Corps for 18 months during WWII. She worked at Hospital of Saint Raphael & as charge nurse and assistant director of Nurses at Brentwood Manor Convalescent Hospital and Parkview Medical Recovery Center. She served as a volunteer at the New Haven area Blood Banks. She was a member of American Legion Post 175 and later Post 89 & Our Lady of Pompeii Ladies Guild. She was Past Regent, Daughters of Isabella, Past President Russell Circle #1 Columbiettes. She volunteered for the March of Dimes, Mental Health, Heart Fund, Cystic Fibrosis, and Polio Vaccine Clinic. Loretta was active till the end. She enjoyed the activities at Ashlar Village, particularly the daily Trivia Games (must be one advantage of the wisdom of 9 decades). She referred to her residence as a Cruise Ship that never left port. A month ago she was able to proudly attend the commissioning of her grandson at US Navy OCS School in Newport, RI. She attended a family gathering in RI two weeks ago. Loretta was excited at the recent news of the upcoming births of two great grandchildren in 2014. The family thanks the staff at Ashlar Village/Masonicare and MidState Medical Center, particularly Drs. Kim & Mark Schaner. The family appreciates the support of Rev. John Lavorgna of Our Lady of Pompeii. Special thanks to Rev. Ralph Haag, CSC, Rector of St Edward's Hall, University of Notre Dame (UND) for candles at the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes and Mass at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the UND. Funeral from Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney Ave, Hamden, Monday at 10:30 am. Mass of Christian Burial at 11 in Our Lady of Pompeii Church. Burial in All Saints Cemetery with full military honors. Calling hours are Sunday from 3-6.
