Mary Elizabeth Byrne Foley Obituary
FOLEY, MARY ELIZABETH BYRNE Mary Elizabeth Byrne Foley passed away on February 26, 2013 at her home with her loving children by her side after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. Mary Beth was born in Derby, Connecticut on September 10, 1946 to Thomas Byrne and Elizabeth King Byrne. Mary Beth grew up in Ansonia and was an Assumption School and Ansonia High School graduate. Mary Beth earned a bachelor's degree from Mount Saint Mary's College in New Hampshire. After meeting her husband, Patrick Foley of County Cork, Ireland, they married in 1971 and were devoted to each other for 36 years until Patrick's passing in 2007. Mary Beth was an educator for over 40 years in both the private and public sector having taught hundreds of children throughout her career before retiring in 2012. "Mrs. Foley" will be remembered affectionately by those she taught for the caring and compassionate teacher she was and her gentle, soft-spoken demeanor. A lifelong communicant of the Assumption Church, Mary Beth was devoted to her Catholic faith and was a Eucharistic Minister. She taught religious education for many years and generously gave her time to parishioners and community members in need. She especially enjoyed volunteering at the Spooner House serving meals to the less fortunate. Above all, Mary Beth cared about family. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her children and grandchildren. Weekly dinners and weekends by the pool with family were times that meant so much to her. She also had a close group of friends whom she considered family and cared deeply about. The plaque hanging in her home for decades reads: Cead Mile Failte - "One Hundred Thousand Welcomes" and describes perfectly how Mary Beth lived her life, always welcoming everyone into her home with a smile. Mary Beth leaves behind 5 children: Patricia Foley Ingram, Thomas Foley and his wife Susan Morse Foley, Sean Foley, Kathleen Foley and her fiance' Scott Mierkiewicz and Brendan Foley, as well as 3 cherished granddaughters, Hannah Ingram, Maeve Ingram and Isabelle Mierkiewicz. Mary Beth also leaves behind sister-in-law, Margaret Foley, several cherished sisters and brothers-in-law in Ireland, as well as countless cousins, nieces, nephews and friends whose lives she touched. In addition to her husband and parents, Mary Beth was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Tara Foley and her son-in-law, Jeffrey Ingram. In her final days, Mary Beth was lovingly cared for by her children with the support and guidance of Connecticut Hospice and the Father McGivney Cancer Center. Calling Hours on Friday from 4-7pm in the Bennett Funeral Home, 91 N. Cliff St., Ansonia, CT. On Saturday, friends meet directly at The Church of the Assumption for a mass of Christian Burial at 10am. Burial will be in Mt. St. Peter's Cemetery, Derby.
