ROBIN MONACO Obituary

MONACO, ROBIN G. Robin Gabriel Monaco, 54, of Branford, passed after a brief illness on Monday, January 25, 2016. Rob was born in New Haven on September 5, 1961; son of Anne Marie Anderson Monaco and the late Robin Gabriel Monaco. Rob was a graduate of Hamden High School where he enjoyed a standout career as captain of the football and baseball teams. While a Hamden Dragon, Rob earned a variety of district and state level recognitions, and for his contributions to Connecticut football, he was named to the New Haven Gridiron Club Hall of Fame in 2014. Recruited heavily out of high school, Robin signed with the Vanderbilt Commodores and started four years as left tackle while studying geology and sociology. As team captain, and a consummate teammate, Rob went on to earn many honors including All-SEC and All-American recognition. Rob enjoyed a young man’s dream by being drafted into the NFL in 1985. He played offensive center for the St. Louis Cardinals before an injury ended his promising career. He was so exuberant and full of life, he never met a stranger; he brightened a room with his smile, and he was a fiercely loyal friend. Rob channeled his love of life into fishing, good BBQ, and his greatest passion - time with friends and family. He will be remembered by friends and family as the Gentle Giant and he will be deeply missed. Beloved father of Robin Gabriel Logan Monaco III and Haley Catherine Monaco. Brother of Ron (Darlene) Monaco. Also survived by his former wife Susan Monaco Hutchinson and longtime companion, Karen Mahmood. Predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Gabriel Richard and Florence Grace Monaco and his maternal grandparents, Carl Ernest and Anne Therese Cullen Anderson. His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue, Saturday morning at 9:30. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 10:00. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. The visiting hours will be Friday from 4 to 8 pm. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Sleeping Giant Park Association (www.sgpa.org) PO Box 185340, Hamden, CT 06518. www.northhavenfuneral.com

An old friend

January 29, 2016

I remember Rob pitching in the Hamden Fathers league. When he was on the mound, you stood a little further away from the plate, not because he threw the ball inside, but because the ball was travelling faster than any 14 year old should be able to throw. A tremendous athlete and all around nice guy.

Anne, Karen, And Rob's loved ones; It is with heavy heart that I send you love and condolences. I know only to well what an incredible void you are left with. I was blessed to have Rob introduced to my life a couple years ago and the impact he leaves on you is as if you have known him forever. The love for you was not only absolutely evident but he expressed it always. Rob was one of the most unique and incredible men I have ever met, he was compassionate and caring as well as extremely intelligent. Some of my favorite times in life were at your home watching movies, playing monopoly, or just talking. I always felt so comfortable and welcome there conversations with Rob were always stimulating and knowledgeable. I always left from a day with him feeling loved and a little wiser. Rob was an honest, loyal, and giving man I loved his hugs when he embraced you with those incredible welcoming arms that squeezed you tight, full of love and truly genuine. Although I did not see him in recent days I thought of him often and feel an incredible absence. I am sending a hug just like his and my love to you my friends. He truly was a gentle giant.

Dear Ann, Karen + Robin's family: It was a pleasure, and honor to get to know Robin in the time I had with him recently. He was very jovial, humble and encouraging every moment I spent with him. He loved his family and those that cared for him. I wish you all peace and comfort during this time.
