Salvatore Melchiore Sr. Obituary
MELCHIORE, SALVATORE J., SR. Salvatore J. Melchiore, Sr., passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Haven. He was the loving husband of Helen L. (Lasky) Melchiore. Mr. Melchiore was born in Waterbury, CT, son of the late Frank and Elvira Melchiore. He had worked at Boise Cascade Co. for 42 years (only two sick days) and retired as production manager. He nobly served his country in the United States Marines during the Korean War. Sal was an avid golfer, proudly had four hole-in-ones, and played at the Orange Hill Country Club with his many friends. He was the epitome “Mr. Fix it” and loved helping everyone he knew. He was known for his soft spoken demeanor and the honor and dignity in which he always carried himself. He loved his family, his friends, and his country. He was also an avid Notre Dame Football, New York Yankee, and Giants fan. Besides his wife of 58 years, Sal is survived by his mother-in-law, Adele Lasky; his daughter, Marla Melchior Polites; two sons, Salvatore J. Melchiore, Jr. and John Melchiore, two daughters-in-law, Kersti Melchior and Jennifer Melchior; his sister Judith M. Gonillo; brother-in-law, Vito Gonillo; brother Frank Melchiore; sister-in-law, Jean Melchior; sister-in-law, Irene Lasky Klotz; brother-in-law, Bob Klotz; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Marie Rosa. Calling hours will be held at the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main Street, Naugatuck on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. A Mass will follow at St. Mary’s Church, 338 North Main Street, at Noon. Burial with military honors will follow in St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Connecticut Veterans Administration Hospice Unit, 950 Campbell Avenue, West Haven, CT 06516 or to Smilow Cancer Center at Yale New Haven, 20 York Street, New Haven, CT 06510.
