Stanley Barakis Obituary

BARAKIS, STANLEY A. Stanley Andrew Barakis, 89, NHPD (ret.) of Branford, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2014 in St. Raphael’s Campus of Yale NH Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Florence Basel Barakis for 62 wonderful years. Mr. Barakis was born in Manchester, N.H. Aug. 7, 1924, son of the late Andrew and Alexandra Tsaltas Barakis. He joined the New Haven Police Dept. Jan. 1, 1951. During his 43 year career with the NHPD, he achieved the rank of Detective and served in many departments including Gambling & Narcotics and the Crime Prevention Unit. He graduated from FBI Narcotics Training School in Virginia. During World War II, he proudly served in the US Navy both in Normandy and in the Pacific. He was a member of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, where he served on the Parish Council and on the Odyssey Festival Committee. He was a member of New Haven Chapter 98, Order of AHEPA. Besides his wife, he is survived by three loving daughters, Bonnie Barakis (Bob Rosenberg) of West Haven, Cynthia Barakis (John Gregg) of Hamden and Karen (Ralph) Prete of New York City; one brother, James Barakis of Manchester, N.H.; three grandchildren, Zachary Rosenberg, Ralphie & Violet Prete whom he dearly adored; as well as several nieces, nephews, and many loving and caring friends. He was predeceased by a brother, John Barakis, sisters, Olga Barakis and Sophie Bochenek and sisters in law, Shirley & Faye Barakis. Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Monday from 4 to 8 pm and are invited to attend funeral services in St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 480 Racebrook Road, Orange Tuesday morning at 10:30. Interment, with Military Honors, in Beaverdale Memorial Park, Hamden. Contributions in Stanley’s memory may be made to St. Barbara Church Building Fund. www.celentanofuneralhome.com
