Walter L. Czapiga

CZAPIGA, WALTER L. Walter L. Czapiga, age 88, of Clinton passed away on Tuesday afternoon, September 10, 2013 at the West Haven Veterans Administration Hospital in West Haven. Walter was the beloved husband of the late Mildred (Kroupa) Czapiga. Walt had been a resident of Clinton for over 60 years and was formerly of Deep River. He had worked as a foreman in the shipping department at the L.C. Doane Company in Centerbrook for over 30 years. Walter was a proud veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II. He was a member of Company "L", 114th Infantry serving at Normandy and campaigns in Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was a prisoner of war in Germany and a recipient of the Bronze Star Metal. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Centerbrook and the American Legion Post in Old Saybrook. Walt enjoyed many programs at the Estuary Council of Senior Citizens in Old Saybrook. He had a great passion for playing cribbage and played weekly for many years with his special cribbage buddies. He is survived by his daughters, Janet M. Brown, of Westbrook, and Marsha Zawadski, of Old Saybrook. He also leaves his grandchildren, Daniel Brown of Westbrook, Christopher Zawadski and Jennifer Foito both of Clinton, his five great-grandchildren, and his sister, Josephine Glowac of Deep River. Walter was predeceased by several brothers and sisters. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 from 9:30AM-10:30AM at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Street in Centerbrook. A graveside service with the Rendering of Military Honors will follow at 11:00AM at the Resurrection Cemetery, Route 145 in Westbrook.
