GALARDI, DOMINIC JOSEPH Dominic Joseph Galardi, of Hamden, died July 10, 2013 in Yale New Haven Hospital, St. Raphael Campus. He is the loving husband of "GiGi" Buglione Galardi. Dominic was born on Wooster St. in New Haven, March 4, 1931, son of the late Antonio and Anna Lucibello Galardi and was a proud US Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He is the father of AnnaLynn (Stephen) Wheeler and Anthony (Donna) Galardi. Brother of the late Antoinette (Jim) Borrelli, Marie (Ernie) Mattie, Vicky (James) Bruni, and Andrew Galardi. Loving and proud grandfather of Terry Lipka, Chris Nelson, Laurie (Bobby) Bankowski, Michelle Galardi, Stephen (Lexi) Wheeler, Anthony Galardi, Jr., Daniel Wheeler, and Michael Galardi. Great grandfather of Megan and Gianna Lipka, Ashley, Dylan, and Samantha Bankowski, and Adriana Wheeler. Brother-in-law of Michael (Ann) Buglione, Carol (Donald) Mazzarelli, and Anna Galardi. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews, who he loved as his own children. Dominic was President and co-founder of A1 Toyota, along with his father-in-law, Anthony Buglione. They began their business as a gas station and used car lot on Olive Street in New Haven, incorporating in 1951. Together they established and operated this first Toyota dealership in New England in 1963. Today it is the 6th oldest in the country and they celebrate 50 years as a Toyota dealer this very week. The dealership is marked with his countless prestigious awards from Toyota Motor Sales for his personal devotion and record breaking achievements. Toyota dignitaries always made a point to visit him if they were in the New York area. Dom's philosophy with his success in business was to use that success to help others. He is honored every year with the Dominic J. Galardi Charity Golf Tournament. Now in its sixth year, it benefits the Connecticut Food Bank Children's Food Program. For all his many company contributions he received the Corporate Citizen of the Year award. Dominic loved his city of New Haven. He never missed the opportunity to be involved in any New Haven event. His grandchildren have fond memories of accompanying him to drive in the Columbus Day parades. He was a volunteer with the mentoring program for the New Haven Public School System, receiving Partners-In-Education Awards for his dedication and devotion to the children of New Haven. He personally visited many of the New Haven public high schools and Eli Whitney High School, spending one on one time with the students. He helped implement the T-10 (Auto technician certification) program in the early days of Gateway Community College. He was recognized many times for his good works in the community. He received the Veritas Award from Providence College and was recognized by the Black Coalition and Christian Community Action. Dominic was one of the first Presidents of the CT Toyota Dealers Association and a member of the Board of Directors for Founder's Bank. He was extremely proud of his Italian heritage and was a member of the Society of St. Andrew the Apostle, St. Mary Magdalena Society, the Knights of Columbus, Sons of Italy, and the Amity Club. He received awards from the Wooster Square Reunion Committee, the St. Patrick's Neighborhood Reunion Committee and the Columbus Day Parade Committee for his continued involvement and devotion. Dominic's funeral will leave from the Iovanne Funeral Home Inc., 11 Wooster Place, Monday morning at 10:15. Mass of Christian burial in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 11. Burial with military honors in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 3-7pm.
