Herbert Small Obituary
SMALL, HERBERT Herbert Small, 89, of New Haven passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife and lifelong sweetheart of over 70 years, Adele Serow Small. Herb was born in New Haven on March 23, 1924 to the late Jack and Lillian Small. At age 16, he was the manager of Clark's Dairy on Whitney Avenue. He attended West Haven High School and completed his education in the Army. Herb proudly served as 1st Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, 52nd Bomb Squad, 29th Bomb Group, 314th Wing of the 20th Air Force stationed on Guam. He was the last surviving member of his crew with whom he flew 35 missions during WWII. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal for his service. He was the President of the Greater New Haven Homebuilder's Association, President of the Probus Club of West Haven and former Treasurer of the City of West Haven. He was an entrepreneur, story teller and the unofficial “Mayor” of Tower One in New Haven where he and his wife, Adele, have lived for the last several years. He was proud to have studied with Rabbi Scolnic and a group of his peers at Tower One and celebrated a B'nai Mitzvah at age 85. His greatest joy was to be surrounded by his family of whom there are many. He leaves behind 5 children, 14 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. His love of skiing and boating has been passed to all of them. He will be dearly missed by his children: Jeffrey and Barbara, Sherry, Stephen and Patricia, Leigh and Amy, and Robert and Lisa. He is predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Bonnie. His 14 grandchildren: Matthew, Lindsay, Lisa, Abbie, David, Hannah, Andrew, Kevin, Patrick, Beau, Samatha, Barrett, Alexandra and Zachary, and his 8 great grandchildren: Bryce, Ella, Grey, Gunnar, Jackson, Juliete, Daisy, and Quinn will miss his stories and sense of humor. He is also survived by his brother, Albert Small, and sister, Laura Levine, both of whom live at Tower One in New Haven, in addition to numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. Funeral Services at Temple Beth Sholom, 1809 Whitney Ave., Hamden, SUNDAY afternoon at 1:30 o'clock with Interment Services to follow at Mishkan Israel Cemetery, Jewell St., New Haven.
