Saul Lande Obituary

LANDE, SAUL W., M.D., Ph.D. Saul Lande, M.D., Ph.D. of Hamden died at his home on December 12, 2013 after a short battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on August 7, 1930 to Louis and Rosa Weiss Lande. On July 4, 1954 he and the former Suzanne Lanin were married, and that happy marriage lasted more than 59 years until his death. Dr. Lande received his bachelor’s degree from Ursinus College in 1952 and went to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, intending to work towards a Master’s Degree but plans changed when he was drafted into the U. S. Army for two years, spending most of that time at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. In 1957 he asked Klaus Hofmann, M.D., Ph.D. if he could do research in his lab at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Hofmann agreed and in 1962 Dr. Lande received his Ph.D. in biochemistry. For the next two years Dr. Lande did research at the Squib Institute for Biochemical Research in East Brunswick, NJ when he was recruited by Aaron B. Lerner, M.D., Ph.D., head of the Section of Dermatology at the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven. In January 1970 Dr. Lande at the age of 40, cut back his research hours and entered the Yale University School of Medicine as a student, graduating three years later with his M.D. degree. He interned for one year at the Hospital of St. Raphael and passed the specialty boards in Emergency Medicine only the second time they were ever given. After working shifts at many of the nearby hospitals he took the position of Director of the Emergency Department at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stamford, CT. He remained there until retirement. Dr. Lande always loved classical music and audited courses at the Yale School of Music, learning orchestration among other things. He composed a number of pieces and enjoyed the new challenge of learning something different. He also loved painting and took lessons in that medium. The Landes loved cruising and sailed on a total of 58 and enjoyed seeing and learning about many exotic countries. Dr. Lande was predeceased by his older brother Jerome. He is survived by his beloved wife Suzanne, his four children Leslie Ann Marsh, Clayton Geoffrey, Richard Joseph and Stephanie Lanin Perry, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. A special thank you from the family to Lenora Lowe CNA, his caregiver for the past year. Donations in Dr. Lande’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

Saul is my Aunt Leslie's father, and I was priveledged to share many family gatherings with him growing up. I was always very humbled in his presence, admiring his story of going to medical school at age 40 and infinite knowledge, always willing to tell us kids some interesting facts. I'm very fortunate to have know him and remember Saul as a man of true elegance and wisdom. His passion for medicine and music stood out and instilled a respect and desire for higher education. He emanated true strength and a tempered confidence that was humbling. Thank you Saul for all of your contributions to the many lives you've healed, taught, and touched. Much love to all who knew and loved him.
