SARANEC, PHYLLIS MARIE ROSS Phyllis Marie Ross Saranec, a New Haven native, and lately of Spring Glen, Hamden, died peacefully on January 9th from complications sustained in a recent fall. She was 94. Mrs. Saranec was born on May 23, 1919, the middle daughter of the later Robert Patrick Ross, also a New Haven native, and Margaret Maud Fox Ross of Madoc, Canada. Mrs. Saranec graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1936 and New Haven State Teacher’s College (now Southern Connecticut State University) in 1940. In 1944, she received a Master of Arts degree from Yale University, specializing in Education and School Psychology. Years later, after a successful teaching career and raising her family, she continued her education at Southern, completing four additional Master of Arts degrees and two Sixth Year Diplomas all in fields relating to Education, School Psychology, and Reading. Her last degree was earned at age 77. Following the death of her husband, the late Eddie Saranec, a local professional musician, orchestra leader, and owner of Saranec Piano and Organ Company, Mrs. Saranec took over as President of the music business and managed it for the following 8 years. During this time, Mrs. Saranec also obtained a Connecticut Real Estate and Brokers License. Mrs. Saranec was an avid member of the St. Rita Parish and also a member of the New Haven Council of Catholic Women, the Yale Club of New Haven, the Yale Graduate Association, the SCSU Alumni Association. the Musicians Union Local 234, the High Lane Club, and the Owenego Beach Club. She also enjoyed volunteering and tutoring for various service groups and local libraries in the New Haven area. She was a kind and giving woman, and a loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed antiques, travel, and sports. Mrs. Saranec was preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters, Dr. Margery Ross and Ms. Mabel Tower, her husband, Eddie Saranec, and her daughter Elisabeth Petersen. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Livermore, and her son, Christopher Saranec, 6 grandchildren and one great grandson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, February 8th at St. Rita Church, 1620 Whitney Avenue, Hamden. Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Sisk Brothers Funeral Home.
