Richard A. (Dick) Schaefer Obituary
SCHAEFER, RICHARD A. (DICK) Richard A. (Dick) Schaefer passed away at home on May 23, 2014, with his family by his side after a short illness. He is survived by his children, Richard J. Schaefer of West Haven, Elizabeth Hadlock (Kevin) of Orange, and Mary Ellen Bertini (Nicholas) of Stratford, as well as his second wife, Barbara B. Schaefer, 7 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on September 28, 1921, he was the son of the late Louis A. and Magdalen H. Schaefer. Mr. Schaefer was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Eileen Kelleher Schaefer, his brothers, Raymond and Robert Schaefer and sister, Marge S. Johnson. Mr. Schaefer graduated from Hillhouse High School and was a 1942 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. He proudly served his country as an officer in the Marine Corps in the Pacific theater during World War II, achieving the rank of Captain. Mr. Schaefer was employed as a sales representative for Graybar Electric Company for over 25 years before becoming an independent manufacturer’s representative. He was a charter member of the West Haven Lions Club, and an active member of the St. John Vianney Holy Name Society. He also served as a lector at St. John Vianney Church for many years. Since 2002, he had been a communicant of Holy Infant Parish in Orange. An avid golfer, Mr. Schaefer enjoyed wintering in Fort Myers, Florida for many years. Both he and Eileen had been golfing members of the former Riverview Country Club in Milford and Brownson Country Club in Huntington. He regularly attended Holy Cross class reunions as a member of the Purple Knights. The hours for visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 8pm at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green. His funeral procession will leave the funeral home Wednesday morning at 9:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 in Holy Infant Church. Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery.
