O’NEILL, EVELYN “BABE” MORRIS Evelyn “Babe” Morris O’Neill of Branford passed away peacefully at Yale-New Haven Hospital on Wednesday June 4, with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her husband William J. O’Neill, Jr. in 2002 after 49 years of marriage. Evelyn was born on July 20, 1927 to John and Mariantha Gamogiani Moutzouris (Morris) and was a resident of Branford for most of her 86 years. She leaves behind her loving sons, William J. O’Neill, III (Penny) of Branford and John J. O’Neill (Joyce) of Clifton, VA. Evelyn cherished her granddaughters Heather O’Neill (Kevin Holly) of Fredericksburg, VA, Margaret O’Neill of Clifton, VA and her great-granddaughter Alexis Holley of Fredericksburg, VA. Evelyn is also survived by her sisters-in-law Shirley Sweetman of West Haven and Mildred Morris of Ashburn, VA. She also leaves behind her nephew John Morris (Pam) of Fairfax Station , VA. She was predeceased by her brother Harry Morris, and sister, Sophia “Sonny” O’Neill. Evelyn graduated from Branford High School in 1943, and was also a graduate of Larson Junior College in New Haven. In her early years, Evelyn enjoyed working with her father in the family’s restaurant (Branford Restaurant) and later at her family’s liquor store (Tom’s Package Store) both on Main Street in the center of Branford. When her children were born, she became a stay-at-home mom and was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She truly enjoyed playing cards, going to the horse races at Saratoga and the Big “A”, and watching her much-loved New York Yankees. When the Boston Red Sox, her husband’s team, played the Yankees, there was never a quiet moment in the O’Neill house. Evelyn was always a dog lover, and took great pleasure in caring for her treasured dog, Skilo. Evelyn was an avid traveler, and she and Bill vacationed in several states on both the east and west coasts. She also enjoyed many trips abroad, visiting Ireland, Scotland, England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and the Greek Islands, the home of her parents. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Sunday June 8, 2014, from 3 – 6 PM at the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street, Branford. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11:30 in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Beaverdale Memorial Park, New Haven.
