Obituary Condolences

FRISA, HELEN SFERRAZZA Helen Sferrazza Frisa of Cheshire passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Friday, July 4, 2014 with family by her side. She was the wife of the late Salvatore Frisa. Helen moved to the US when she was sixteen. After marrying on July 5, 1943 she lived in the Westville section of New Haven for many years where she raised her family. Helen was very involved with the Saint Aedan’s Home and School Association where all her children attended school. Helen and her husband were also very active members for many years of the New Haven Lions Club and on the board of the Boys and Girls Village in Milford. Helen moved to Hamden in 1972 where she resided at the Meadowbrook Co-ops. After her retirement she was a very loyal volunteer at Saint Raphael’s Hospital until she was 90 years old. She was a member of the Owenego Beach Club in Branford for over 50 years where she spent many happy summers enjoying time with good friends. She loved basking in the sunshine and the cool waters of Long Island Sound. She moved to Cheshire in 2007 when she became a resident at Elim Park Place. She spent the last seven years living there where she kept active with many activities including exercise class and cooking special meals with other residents. She was an avid walker and enjoyed daily long walks around the grounds. During the colder months, she continued her walks through the hallways of the connected buildings at Elim Park where she made many friends with other residents and staff members. The family is extremely grateful to all of the dedicated people at Elim Park who provided such a caring environment in the last years of her life and to the medical staff who took excellent care of her when her health declined recently. Helen is the mother of Jo-Anne (Pieter) VanTujil of Marabella, Spain, Linda (David, MD) McCarthy of Wynnewood, PA and Joseph Frisa of New York City. Sister of Constance Sferrazza and the late Josephine Porrello, Anna Cosenza and Jean Portolese. Grandmother of Alice McCarthy and Thomas Shannon of New York City and Elizabeth Shannon of LA. Also survived by her nieces Patricia Miller of Cheshire and Carol Mauriello of West Haven. Her funeral will leave the IOVANNE FUNERAL HOME, INC. 11 Wooster Pl. Thursday morning at 9:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 4-6pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Boys and Girls Village, 528 Wheelers Farms Rd. Milford, CT 06461. Sign Helen’s guest book online at www.iovanne.com.
