ALTIERI, MARY PAPPACODA Mary Pappacoda Altieri 100, of New Haven, beloved wife of the late Salvatore Altieri, passed away on July 13, 2014, surrounded by her loving family in the Mary Wade Home. Loving mother of Louise Giammattei (the late Joseph) of East Haven and Frank (Margaret) Altieri of Northford. She had 4 grandaughters, Olga-Lynn (Pio) D’Ambrosca of East Haven, Mary-Louise (Louis) Capobianco of Madison, Laura-Ann Giammattei of Milford and Natalie (Mark) Speranza of Wallingford. Great grandmother of Rocco and Gianna D’Ambrosca, Monica and Erica Capobianco, Isabelle Andronaco, Haley and Nico Speranza and a special friend and caregiver Fred Trotta. Sister of Lucy Manzi, Caroline (Paul) Carrera and George Pappacoda, all of East Haven, and Michael Pappacoda of Fresno, CA, and the late Fannie Torello, Raffie Redente and Andrew, Anthony, Salvatore, Lawrence and Louis Pappacoda. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends who will miss her dearly. Oldest of 12 children Mary was born in New Haven on December 17, 1913, lived in New Haven all her life, was the daughter of the late Nicola and Louise Simone Pappacoda. Mary worked for many years in local dress shops. A retired member of the Womens Garment Worker Union. She loved to sew and do alterations. She loved cooking, baking and having friends at her house for dinner. Mary was a member of the Jolly Time Seniors. Playing bingo, trips to the casino and playing cards, especially pinocle, were the things she enjoyed. She had boundless energy and dedication for any project she undertook. Mary was a very active member and fundraiser of St. Donato’s Parish. She was a member and President of the Altar Society for 15 years. Every year she organized the making of palm crosses during the week prior to “Palm Sunday”. This project had been brought to St. Francis Church when St. Donato’s closed. Her time and tireless efforts to help St. Donato’s Church were greatly appreciated. In 2002 the church hall was dedicated and named The Mary Altieri Hall. She was one of the founders and organizers of the 20/20 Club at St. Donato’s and more recently at St. Francis. She was planning and looking forward to another dinner-dance on August 10, 2014. She was remarkable for her stamina, devotion and support to The Church. She received the St. Joseph Medal of Appreciation from the Archdiocese of Hartford in March 2012. Her funeral procession will leave the PORTO FUNERAL HOME 234 Foxon Rd. (Rte. 80) East Haven THURSDAY morning at 9:15 A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Francis of Assisi Church at 10:00 A.M. Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Friends may call WEDNESDAY from 4pm to 8pm.
