Obituary Condolences

LAVAZZA, YOLANDA GUERRA Yolanda G. Lavazza, 91, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was called to Heaven August 16, 2014. Yolanda was the wife of the late Peter Joseph Lavazza. She was born in West Haven on May 19, 1923 to the late Augusto Guerra and Tersina Longhini Guerra. She leaves behind her son Paul (Diane) Lavazza of Longs, SC, her daughter Jean (Ronald) Oddo of Hamden, CT, loving grandchildren Kami (Edward) Mikelis of Hamden, Craig and Steven Lavazza of Longs, SC, Liza (James) Cifarelli and Alexa Oddo, both of Hamden, and one great-grandson Logan Mikelis; sisters Ines Noel and Virginia (William) King, both of Hamden and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She also leaves behind her beloved companion Ralph Velleca Jr. and her long time dear friend Edith Wolkovitz, both of Hamden. Yolanda resided in Hamden, CT until 2008 when she moved to Aberdeen Country Club, Longs, SC, where she enjoyed watching the golfers and the beautiful sunsets. Yolanda’s work career started when she was 16 helping her Dad in his grocery store. She also worked at SNET as a telephone operator and then later a junior supervisor for operators; in addition she worked at Dunbar Hill School, Arthurs and Sears department stores and the State of CT as a secretary until she retired in 1988. In her post retirement she worked for Brock Enterprise in the office until her second retirement in 2007 at the age of 84. She felt blessed that she enjoyed every job she ever held. Yolanda was an active member of the Ladies Guild, Church of the Ascension in Hamden. She adored and had a passion for cooking Italian food for her family and told wonderful stories about her youth and her Italian heritage to her grandchildren. She was loved by all and will be missed greatly. Friends and family may call Sunday August 24th (TODAY)from 4-6pm at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green. Her funeral procession will leave the funeral home on Monday morning at 9:15 for a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of the Ascension at 10am. Interment will follow in Beaverdale Memorial Park. Remembrances may be made in the form of flowers or to Holy Trinity Catholic School or St. E. A. Seton Catholic HS, c/o Our Lady Star of the Sea (OLSS), 1100 8th Ave. N., North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582.
