Obituary Condolences

balay, harriette shirley anderson Former New Haven resident Harriette Balay died on September 28, 2012 in Middletown, CT. Harriette was born in St. Paul, MN in 1929, and grew up in various parts of the Upper Midwest, but principally at Bagley, MN. She attended Luther Bible Institute in Minneapolis, MN, afterward working as a parish worker at Lutheran Churches in Crosby, ND and Minneapolis. She enrolled at the University of Minnesota, studying elementary education, and taught in St. Paul public schools. She moved to New York in 1960 to teach in the Tenafly, NJ public schools until her marriage to Robert Balay in 1961. The family lived in Englewood, NJ, moving in 1964 to Detroit and in 1968 to New Haven, where her husband was employed by the Yale University Library. She was active in the New Haven community, including serving on the Board of Education for 7 years. Throughout her adult life, she practiced avidly the crafts of knitting, weaving, sewing, and cross-stitch embroidery. She is survived by her husband Robert, her 3 children, Chris, Anne, and Jean, daughter-in-law Suzy, and 5 granddaughters, Emma, Leah, Kendra, and Hanna. A memorial service will be held at Bethesda Lutheran Church in New Haven at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 21. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be sent to the following organizations: Planned Parenthood Federation of America, 434 W. 33rd St., New York, NY 10001; Connecticut Chapter American Parkinson's Disease Association, 27 Allendale Drive, North Haven, CT 06473; Christian Community Action, 168 Davenport Avenue, New Haven, CT 06519.
