John Allen Obituary

Allen, John Marshall John Marshall Allen passed away peacefully on February 27, 2013 in North Branford, where he lived with his beloved wife of 64 years, Dorothy. A true gentleman, he was above all a committed family man, much loved for his kindness, enthusiasm, creativity and humor. Born and raised in Orange, New Jersey, he was an honors graduate of Deerfield Academy in 1943. He enlisted that same year in the US Army Infantry and served in Japan as a member of the first wave of occupation forces. In 1946, he resumed his education at Yale University in the department of Chemical Engineering. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Tao Beta Pi in 1949. That same year, he married Dorothy Rossini and embarked on a lifelong adventure together. John worked at Uniroyal for 40 years, principally in management of chemical production and research and development. In the late 1950s, he received an MBA from the University of Connecticut. As Uniroyal expanded, John was sent to Cheshire, England, later to Turin, Italy and to South Bend, Indiana. In 1984, he and Dorothy went on another Uniroyal assignment to Kobe, Japan. Their five years in Japan were perhaps their most interesting adventure. An avid oil painter since his youth, John depicted many places dear to him, and these pictures filled the walls of the home he and Dorothy enjoyed in Woodbridge, Connecticut for 37 years. In addition to his beloved Dorothy, John is survived by his two children, John M. Allen, Jr. (Frances) and Cathy A. Carlson (Steven), three grandchildren, Kate Lacour, Brette Allen and Raymond Carlson and one great-grandson, Hank Lacour. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, (Center Road Church), 81 Center Road (Rte. 114), Woodbridge, CT 06525. Burial will be private in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Keenan Funeral Home, 330 Notch Hill Road, North Branford. Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity.
