Walter Page Obituary

Page, Walter A. Walter A. Page (Wally), age 89, passed from this life into eternal peace March 16, 2013, at Masonicare, Wallingford, CT. He had been a resident of Woodbridge, CT since 1969. Wally was born in Marshfield, WI, but lived his formative years in Shelbyville, IN. He leaves behind his loving wife of 64 years Joanna (Jo), devoted daughter Sally Sherwood and husband Bill of Norman, OK, son Thomas Page of Hamden, CT, and three grandchildren, Andrew, Kyle and Susan Sherwood. He was predeceased by 5 brothers. Wally was a teacher, coach, mentor and administrator by profession. Most of his career was in IN. When he moved to CT, he taught PE in Bridgeport, CT. He earned a basketball scholarship to New Mexico Western College prior to WWII. After the war he attended Tulane University on another basketball scholarship and finished his degree at Ball State University. He proudly served in the US Navy as a fire controlman on the USS Underhill for 4 years. Wally worked tirelessly for others. After having a son with autism, he along with his wife devoted much of their lives working on projects to enrich the lives of autistic individuals. They were instrumental in founding ASCONN and introducing several legislative bills concerning the care of persons with autism. Together they founded Opportunity House (an agency serving autistic adults). He was an active member of First Church of Christ in Woodbridge, and served on many boards and was responsible for many activities. Wally was much cared about by all whose lives he touched. He was a very creative and compassionate person, and will be greatly missed. A private burial will be held. A celebration of life service will be held on April 13, 2013 at 11:00am at the First Church of Christ, Woodbridge, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Opportunity House, Inc., 320 Old Hill Rd., Hamden, CT 06514. Arrangements are with the Hawley Lincoln Memorial, New Haven.
