Harley Hiscock Obituary
HISCOCK, HARLEY J. Harley J Hiscock, 96, of Woodbridge, died peacefully on April 16, 2013. Harley was the beloved husband of the late Phyllis Hiscock who passed away October of 2012. Harley was born in St John's Newfoundland. In 1920, his mother and he moved to Springfield Massachusetts where he later met his beloved wife Phyllis of 71 years. Harley was a self-educated intellectual business man who rose in the grinding wheel industry over a span of 42 years from press helper to President of the FMR Corporation of West Haven. Harley was active in many community, civic and business organizations including the New Haven Rotary Club, former President and founder of the Orange National Bank, former Chairman of the Orange Special Town Plan Committee, former Vice President of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, former President of the Manufacturers Association of New Haven County, former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Grinding Wheel Institute, former member of the Board of Governors of New Haven College, Director of Junior Achievement of New Haven, Director of the New Haven Association for Retarded Children and member of the Inland Wetlands Commission in the town of Bethany. His retirement years were ambitiously spent in the commercial real estate business with H. Pearce Company, Cushman and Wakefield and Dow Realty. He was long time member of The Race Brook Country Club and the Quinnipiack Club. Harley enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hiker and camper with his wife and family throughout his life. His many adventures included hiking to the top of Mount Washington in New Hampshire and camping along the Long Trail. His greatest pleasure was the family's house in Stowe, Vermont. His passion for skiing was unending. Harley was always the first out the door to head to a great day on the slopes of Stowe. He also enjoyed sailing and golf. Harley was always interested in others lives and what they were involved in. Whether engaged in conversation or reading about a new scientific discovery, he was always involved in the pursuit of knowledge. He would get his news each day from his computer and the daily newspaper. Harley was the father of Lynne Dow of Branford, Shelley Dering of Bethany, and Harley Hiscock Jr husband of Diane Denis of Woodbridge. He was the grandfather of Jennifer Olsen, Jeff Dow, Christopher and Michael Dering, Harley Hiscock III and Thomas Hiscock, Taylor Shea and Lauren Denis. Harley also leaves behind five great grandchildren. Services will be held on Sunday at 2:00 PM at the Church of the Good Shepard 680 Racebrook Road Orange CT. A memorial service will be held in August which will be done by invitation. If interested in attending, please send an email to hjhiscock@optonoline.net .
