Frances Conte Obituary
CONTE, FRANCES F. Frances F. Conte of North Haven, Connecticut, beloved wife of Robert Conte, died peacefully on April 24, 2013 at Connecticut Hospice. Frances, the daughter of the late Frank and Rose Melillo Ferreno, was born in New Haven on January 20, 1931. Frances graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1948 and began working for Yale University in the Sterling Memorial Library. She resumed her education after marrying and beginning a family and, in 1971, Frances graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a BS in Early Childhood Education. She received a Master's in General Counseling from Southern Connecticut in 1982 and a sixth year degree in Counseling from Southern Connecticut in 1988. From 1972-1982, Frances taught first grade at Foote School in New Haven and was a teacher/advisor in the child care services program at Wilbur Cross High School. From 1982-1984, she was a homebound teacher for the New Haven School system and a counselor-intern at the Center for the Study of Behavior in Hamden. Frances was the teacher/advisor in the young parents program at Wilbur Cross from 1984-1987. In 1987, she joined the staff of Hillhouse as a teacher/advisor in its parenting program and a lead teacher for the Hillhouse community of caring program. She was a guidance counselor at Betsy Ross Arts Magnet School from 1991-1994 and also at Hillhouse from 1994 until her retirement in 1995. She was a long-time member of the Board of Directors of the Leila Day Nursery child care center. She was active in St. Rita Church in Hamden and enjoyed volunteering at Green Acres Elementary School in North Haven. She was an avid swimmer and lover of crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, and the New York Yankees. Her laughter brought smiles to everyone in the room and she was always the first and last person on the dance floor. She had boundless, positive energy and an endless desire to help young people reach their potential. Most of all, she had tremendous love and affection for all her sisters, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is survived by her husband Robert of North Haven and her son Christopher, her daughter-in-law Meredith Jason, and her two grandchildren, Alex and Billy, of Washington, D.C. Frances also is survived by her sisters Lillian Abbate of Hamden, Marguerite Schaefer of California, and Eleanore Cretella of Branford. She was predeceased by sisters Josephine Cruz Scarpo and Camille Angeloni. France's family would like to thank the staff of the oncology and radiology departments at the Father Michael J. McGiveny Cancer Center, VNA Community Healthcare of Hamden, and Connecticut Hospice for all their care and compassion. Funeral from MARESCA & SONS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Chapel St., Monday at 9:15 am.
